The Co-operative Group isn’t yet paying the Living Wage to all of its staff, despite many retailers having come on board in the last year. Many of us would love to see the Group sign up, as a big local employer with ethics at its heart, so with Valentines Day coming up we decided to tell them how we feel! What’s more, if you write before Valentine’s Day you can enter yourself into a prize draw!
Main Action – Just click on this link, re-write it in your own words if you’d like to, send, and when you’re done, tell the Living Wage Foundation for a chance to win a wide range of goodies from some of the best Living Wage employers around. The e-action’s being hosted by our friends at CAP as a favour, and no details are being collected.
Further Action 1 – If you’re really keen on getting the Living Wage into the Co-op, why not tweet about it as well, to @TheCooperative with the #CoopLWNow hashtag
Further Action 2 – We’re going to the Co-op Group’s head office on Friday 12th February to give them a giant Valentine’s card asking them to love the Living Wage. We’d love as many people as possible to join us for 1:30pm, at One Angel Square, Manchester, M60 0AG
Update – the Co-op have written back to us, and have asked us to pass the response on to everyone – click here to read it. In summary, the letter:
- agrees that their pay rates had fallen behind those of some other retailers
- says that a significant pay deal struck with trade union USDAW last year has gone some way to addressing this
- acknowledges that this is only a first step
We agree, and hope that it is the first step on the road to the full Living Wage! We will go ahead with our plans for Friday and encourage everyone to keep writing, sharing, tweeting, and if possible to join us at 1:30pm on Friday at One Angel Square, Manchester, M60 0AG
