Living Wage for Local Businesses

Last week the GM Chamber of Commerce hosted a great event, held for local companies to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by the Living Wage.

Speakers Mike Cribb and Sara Saunby, with chair John Leigh on the right

We heard from Sara Saunby from Salut Wines and Mike Cribb from Quantiv, about why they are Living Wage Employers, giving reasons such as:

  • staff retention and loyalty
  • improved customer service
  • better team spirit
  • ethics
  • reputation

The next session, chaired by John Leigh, was discussion-based, as participants broke down into groups to talk about the challenges and opportunities of the Living Wage for their businesses.

Finally Caroline Reilly from the Living Wage Foundation spoke about the national picture, and what the Foundation can do to help employers.

We finished with questions to all the speakers, lively discussion with ideas generated that will inform the campaign’s next steps as we keep on engaging the private sector.

The event was jointly organised by the Greater Manchester Living Wage Campaign and North West TUC.

The next day Sara Saunby gave a great account of the Living Wage on Radio 5Live’s Wake Up to Money – you can listen or download the podcast here, the Living Wage feature is 28:30mins into the program.
